Why Nutrients on Pet Food Labels Matter
Every bag of dog food or can of cat food carries a guaranteed analysis panel — a short table listing minimum and maximum levels of key nutrients. Knowing what those nutrients do helps you read that panel with confidence rather than guessing. The Core Nutrients and What Each One Does
Protein
Protein supplies amino acids, the building blocks used to maintain muscle, repair tissue, support the immune system, and produce hormones and enzymes. Dogs require 10 essential amino acids; cats require 11, including taurine — an amino acid cats cannot synthesize in adequate amounts on their own. Taurine deficiency in cats is linked to dilated cardiomyopathy and retinal degeneration, which is why commercially complete cat foods must supply it. Fat
Dietary fat is the most energy-dense macronutrient, providing roughly 2.25 times the calories per gram that protein or carbohydrates provide. Fat carries fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K), supports skin and coat health, and provides essential fatty acids such as linoleic acid (omega-6) and alpha-linolenic acid (omega-3). Omega-3 fatty acids — particularly EPA and DHA — are associated with anti-inflammatory effects and are often highlighted on pet food labels or added as supplements.
Carbohydrates and Fibre
Neither dogs nor cats have a strict dietary carbohydrate requirement, but carbohydrates serve as an energy source and most kibble contains them as starch. Dietary fibre, a subset of carbohydrates, supports gut motility, feeds beneficial gut bacteria, and helps regulate stool consistency. Soluble fibres (such as psyllium or beet pulp) slow digestion and can support blood sugar stability; insoluble fibres add bulk and speed transit time. Calcium and Phosphorus
These two minerals work in tandem. Calcium builds and maintains bone and teeth, enables muscle contraction, and supports nerve signaling. Phosphorus partners with calcium in bone formation and is involved in energy metabolism. The calcium-to-phosphorus ratio matters as much as absolute levels — an imbalance can interfere with bone development, particularly in large-breed puppies.
